Miami Facial: The Importance of Using Topical Vitamin C

Of course, all of us know how valuable vitamin C is for our general health.  Most of us probably take it orally every day to ward off colds, form healthy bones, muscle, cartilage, skin and blood vessels.  (If you bruise easily, it will help lessen the likelihood.)  It functions as an antioxidant, helping to get rid of dangerous byproducts of digestion that are thought to contribute to aging and the development of  cancer and heart disease.  BUT….many of us are not aware of the benefits of using it TOPICALLY.  This all began about 20 years ago when a Duke University study showed that L-ascorbic acid reduced UVB damage when applied to the backs of hairless pigs.  This suggested that photodamage or “sun spots” could be repaired with topical use of vitamin C.  Well, a lot of progress has been made since then!  Here’s what  it can do:

  • Protect skin cells and skin’s support structure promoting photoprotection from UVA and UVB rays;
  • Improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin;
  • Reduce inflammation;
  • Promote and stimulate collagen production;
  • Enhance effectiveness of peels and microdermabrasion;
  • Lessen hyperpigmentation;
  • Boost the efficacy of sunscreen actives.

Thus, the time to apply it is in the morning, after cleansing and before you apply your sunscreen.  It does not replace sunscreen, but your sunscreen will work better.   Also, you should make sure your topical vitamin C does not oxidize.  Store it in a dark place away from light and heat.  There are many topical vitamin C products on the market.  I carry the PCA Skin line, and more specifically the “A&C Serum,” which specifically works to reduce oiliness, it is antibacterial, and helps to even the skin tone; “C-Quench,” which is better for dry skin; and, both, 15% Vitamin C, and 20% Vitamin C creams, featured in the latest New Beauty magazine.  These are very active, and you will feel them working!

On that thought, I’m happy to announce that I am included in the Winter/Spring 2012 issue of New Beauty magazine , where I  participate in an article on topical vitamin C! (Begins on page 38.)  By the way, you may view part of the article right here In the Press!

Last words: Take vitamin C every morning by mouth and use it topically, as well.  It will be worth it, both for your general health AND appearance of your skin!  My personal favorites are Emergen-C powder drink for a big boost, and topically I use several from the PCA Skin line, since I sell them.

I hope you found this information useful.   I would love to hear your feedback, so please leave a comment below and share this post with your friends and family on Facebook and Twitter.
